January is "Get Organized Month," or "GO Month" for those of you who like snazzy titles.

Almost every time I help a mom organize her home, I hear, "Oh man, this is so embarrassing! Your house must be immaculate. It doesn't always look like this, I swear!" Now before we had a child, our house was almost always tidy. Sure, a few things were left on the counter or a bag in the doorway, but it was for the most part lookin' pretty good. Then came Cubscout and the exponential amount of baby gear, little dishes, toys {If I step on one more piece of fake food...}, doctors appointment info, and just stuff that comes along with these adorable little treasures to keep them warm, plump, and cheerful. Now I choke over my stifled snorts and giggles when I think of those moms! I want to call them all and say, "I get it now!!! Totally get it." The truth is, life sometimes just gets in the way. We get lazy. Choose an excuse; there are lots to go around.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and show you what my counter looked like on December 31st and then how I used a few organizing tools to create our new and improved Family Command Center.

First things first. I threw away all of the magazines in the pile to the left that I haven't or will not read. I kept my cooking mags and stored them in a magazine holder alongside my other gazillion cooking magazines. We sorted through all the papers, receipts, gift cards, and business cards. Some papers took a fun trip down the shredder, and others were filed in our new file box. Business cards found themselves on the wheel of our little yellow Rolodex. Receipts and gift cards were placed in the file box as well for quick reach as we leave the house. Everything else was put away or tossed.

My company, KC Streamline Concepts, designed and produced the file box. We offer a line of organizing tools and systems at www.alphaomegacollection.com. Stay tuned for my next post about our new website and products!

I labeled our hanging file folders with Filertek Dry-Erase Folder Tabs. I love that I can reuse these tabs and relabel them as needed without having to bring out my label maker.

Create folders that are specific to your family's daily life. {Clearly stickers are important in our house.} Here are some suggested tabs: To Do, Menu Planning, Take-out Menus, Coupons, Gift Cards, Medical, Dental, Babysitter, To File, and To Pay.
Easily store your gift cards in your hanging file folder by taping an envelope to the inside. This way, they won't shift or slip out of the folder.

One of our new years resolutions as a couple is to put our phones and iPads down when Brian comes home from work. From the time he walks in the door until the time Cubscout goes to bed, it is family time. Brian bought this sweet valet tray on Red Envelope, which unfortunately is no longer available. Since Cubs is too little to use it yet, we chose to use it as a dedicated place to put our phones during family time.

I hope this motivates you to create a fun and organized Family Command Center. Life is so much better when it's stress-free and simple.

I hope you had a lovely holiday and spent yesterday with the ones you love.

2014 is the Year of the Horse. It's time to harness your energy and use it to propel you forward this year. Dream big. Love hard. Work smart. Plan well. Pursue goals you've been putting off. {I know I am!} Remember that decisive action leads to success.

Take time to write down your goals and make a detailed plan to accomplish each. I'm using Evernote to keep track of mine this year.

I'm really excited to see what this year brings. It's already off to a great start with my company's product line, The Alpha-Omega Collection, being featured in the Better Homes & Gardens Spring Storage Edition! It's a dream come true!

Here's to a happy, healthy, and successful new year! Cheers!

Our little bear is growing up so fast; it seems like yesterday we were celebrating her birthday. She's spunky, witty, and oh so curious. So much so that she wouldn't leave me alone when I was in the kitchen. Every time I washed dishes, made a meal or made a much needed cup of joe, Cubs would hang on my leg or sit on the floor at my feet and fuss until I picked her up.

We are believers in the Montessori way of teaching life skills from an early age. Brian was browsing Ikea Hackers one evening and came across a DIY post for building a learning tower. Learning towers are basically step stools with safety rails in which a toddler to preschool aged child can stand. It allows a young child the ability to participate in every day chores from washing dishes (Mainly just sloshing around in the sink!) to preparing basic foods and simple kitchen tasks. The tower also serves as a great perch for them to simply hang with you and contribute their jibber jabber to your conversation. (It's adorable.)

Cubscout LOVES her learning tower. She likes being apart of the action and feeling as though she has command of her space. She's learning invaluable life skills and is having a great time. She can climb into it herself (Hasn't mastered getting back down yet.) and even pushes it around the kitchen to be closer to me. Better yet, no more hanging on my leg! Cubs is my little partner in crime in the kitchen, and we've had some really fun times.

You can easily purchase a learning tower from any baby supply store or online. But, be prepare to pay upwards of 200 smackers. I kid you not. Why spend that kind of dough, when you can make one for less than $30?!

Here are the instructions Brian followed. The Ikea stool, which serves as the base of the tower, can be purchased here.

We left the wood in its natural state to blend in with our cabinets. Whether you leave it au natural or paint it, the tower will get a little grimy during your tot's kitchen adventures. Just wipe it down with a sponge and warm soapy water or spray with disinfectant spray.

{If you are looking for instructions to build a more commercial learning tower like you see in stores, you can find building instructions here on Ana White's blog. She refers to it as a "helping tower."}

Take a photo of your learning tower and send it to me. I'd love to do a follow-up post with your awesome builds and toddler adventures!
I have lots of excuses for why I haven't been blogging for the past couple months, but I will spare you. Excuses, excuses...

Lots of great things are in the works for me right now. I have been serving as a design consultant for a startup company here in Silicon Valley and look forward to sharing photos with you in the next few weeks. I just stopped by the office last night, and it's getting there.

I also have an exciting announcement - I'm a founding contributing writer for a new women's online magazine coming out this month called Maxwell's Playbook. I feel really honored to have been asked to write an interior design and organizing column for the mag. I will share more details and a link as soon as it's live!!! To top it all off, I'm also in the process of editing two children's books. Life is surely busy, and certainly blessed.

Be on the lookout for some fun holiday crafts and design boards. I hope you all are enjoying the holiday season!

Last week, I read an interview about growing and caring for lavender on another blog I love – Centsational Girl. Kate also lives here in Northern California and likes to make a yearly visit to the Matanzas Creek Winery and Lavender Gardens. She interviewed the specialist taking care of the gardens. It's really interesting. Brian and I should definitely make a trip up there this fall.

Reading about lavender reminded me that I have had some dried lavender in a baggy just sitting in my spice cabinet. I also had two zucchini's that needed to be used before they went bad and a sad looking basil plant about to die on my counter {I like to think I have a green thumb, but every plant I own reminds me that I don't.}. I wondered if basil and lavender would work together in zucchini bread. These herbs are both found in Herbs de Provence, so I figured why not give it a try. I crossed my fingers hoping the bread wouldn't taste like soap.

I found a great Lemon Rosemary Zucchini Bread recipe on Farmgirl Fare and adapted the recipe to make my own Lavender, Lemon, Basil & Zucchini Muffins. These muffins are so fragrant, and the lemon really brightens up the flavor. They don't smell or taste like soap {Yay!}. The combination of lavender and basil surprisingly tastes a lot like rosemary! They are really delicious!!! If you try the recipe, you have to let me know what you think.

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 pound zucchini, grated (about 3 cups lightly packed)

1 teaspoon dried lavender, roughly chopped

2 medium-sized basil leaves, chopped

2 large eggs
1/2 cup (4 ounces/1 stick) butter, melted
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
3/4 cup maple syrup
1/2 cup light brown sugar

Directions:

Heat the oven to 350°F. Line two muffin/cupcake trays with cupcake liners or spray with non-stick baking spray if you don't want to use paper liners. {This recipe yielded 18 muffins for me.}

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

If your grated zucchini is really moist, squeeze out some {Not all. You need some of the moisture.} of the liquid {You can use a flour sack towel or cheesecloth, but I usually just stand over the sink and use my hands.}, then toss the grated zucchini into the flour mixture with a rubber spatula.

In a small bowl, whisk together the eggs, melted butter, olive oil, maple syrup, brown sugar, lavender, basil, and lemon zest until well combined.

Fold the wet mixture into the dry mixture, gently stirring just until combined. Divide the batter evenly into each paper liner. {This dough turned out a little dry for me so I rolled the dough into balls and dropped them into the liner. I think I squeezed out too much liquid from the zucchini!}

Bake for 11 minutes, rotate your pans and then bake for another 11 minutes. Stick a toothpick or bamboo skewer into the center of a muffin. If it comes out clean, they are baked all the way through. If you press down lightly on the surface of the muffin, it should spring back.

Let the muffins cool for 10 minutes in the pans, then remove them and allow to cool completely on a wire rack. Store in an airtight container or freeze.

{Note} I personally used 2 cups of whole wheat flour, 1 cup white flour to make it healthier for Cubscout. This does make them a little more dense and darker in color. You can substitute coconut flour to make these gluten free – I will try coconut flour next time! I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm taking my friend, Denise, out for her birthday tonight. We're going to catch a comedy show in downtown San Jose. Is it lame that I'm kind of nervous? Silly right? I am definitely NOT sitting in the front row or anywhere near it. I absolutely, 100% do not want to get called out during the show. I hear that happens. Eeek...I'll let you know how it goes. We are both really excited to be out for an evening sans bébés!

In other news...I thought I would start sharing design boards I create with you on Fridays from now on. Sound good?

I've really been enjoying all the gold and brass I have seen pop up in design trends this year. I'm not normally a "gold person." I've always worn silver jewelry until this past year when I decided I like wearing gold as well. I don't know what's gotten into me, but I'm loving shiny, metallic gold mixed with softer hues of pink and cream.

Summertime makes me think of Paris. Paris makes me think of this beautiful poster of these full metallic gold lips and the French phrase, "Je t'aime." underneath the printed pout created by Jen Ramos. {Je t'aime means I love you...}

Jen's a young artist/designer and Editor of Made By Girl, a lifestyle blog. She sells her print designs through her online shop connected to MBG, and you can purchase one of her GORGEOUS original paintings at Cocoa & Hearts. Her abstract work is feminine, sophisticated and colorful. {I want one of her original paintings so badly!!}
This print inspired me to create a blush & gold office palette. Enjoy!

I love her design aesthetic and was surprised to hear she recently painted her home office walls black. Her old office was colorful, bright, and fresh – definitely a room in which I would love to work. But, I think painting a whole room black is daring and super chic. Black and white is my all time favorite combination for both my wardrobe and a room. It's classic. It will never be out of style, and black provides a great base for accenting colors. I can't wait to see how she pulls it all together.

We actually have a wall painted black in our kitchen/living room. When we were choosing appliances for our condo, we had to find the smallest french door refrigerator to fit into the space allotted for a fridge. At first we thought about knocking down part of the wall in the kitchen to fit a larger fridge, but then we reached into our pockets and found only a few pennies left {Whomp, whomp...}. So, we bought the smaller fridge and embraced the wall.

Thinking about our future and having a child, we thought it would be fun to have a magnetic chalkboard wall on which we could draw pictures, teach our little one how to write the alphabet, and leave fun messages to each other. Here's a photo of our wall.
Tip // If you want to paint a wall with magnetic paint, make sure you sand your wall to a smooth finish. Otherwise, regular and heavier magnets will not stick. We learned this the hard way. We use very strong magnets and make sure they are high up where Cubscout cannot reach them. Magnets and babies do not mix.

I've been building a Pinterest board of chalkboard walls. Here are some of my faves that I've found.
This agrarian town known for its berries is nestled between the Monterey Bay and Santa Cruz Mountain Range in California's Central Coast {1 hour drive south of San Jose.}. Its charming historic downtown is lined with Victorian Era building facades, and many of the old produce packing warehouses {many still in use} surrounding the town are painted with beautiful murals and replicas of produce labels.
I love produce labels and am fascinated by the history of these boastful and colorful graphic designs, which illustrate the bounty of California's rich agricultural history. Produce labels were first printed and posted on fruit and vegetable crates in the late 1800's. With the completion of the transcontinental railway system, farmers in California were able to expand their businesses by transporting their produce to the midwest and all the way to the eastern seaboard. When these pallets of produce crates arrived, they were sent to auction. Market owners and individuals would flock to their local auction and purchase the produce without actually seeing the quality of the items first. Produce labels helped auctioneers and buyers know what was in each crate. Farmers invested in bright, colorful illustrations of California's golden rolling hills, large-scale fruit drawings, rows of produce, and Mission Style architecture to catch the eye of prospective buyers. Labels are now highly collectable and make beautiful artwork.

I took some photos of produce label murals around Watsonville to share with you. I'm short one - a big, scary hound dog chased me away from the last warehouse. No, I'm not kidding. I forgot how fast I can run! Brian and I plan to print a couple of these and find a spot for them in the house.
We spent the evening decorating cupcakes, drinking champagne and eating too many cupcakes. It was a good night.

I wanted to share my favorite traditional southern cake with the girls and prepared hummingbird cupcakes in advance for the party. This decadent and tropical cake is made with bananas, crushed pineapple, pecans and spices, and topped with cream cheese frosting.

Hummingbird cake was first published in Southern Living magazine in 1978. The recipe was submitted by Mrs. L. H. Wiggins of Greensboro, NC. The origin of the cake's name and recipe are unknown, but food historians {The Food Timeline} believe the cake originated in Jamaica. The hummingbird {aka "Dr. Bird" in the island nation} is one of Jamaica's national symbols.

I garnished my cupcakes with dried pineapple flowers {I followed Annie's Eats tutorial.}.
I think it's always a good idea to decorate a cupcake with one
of the ingredients. It's helpful for your guests to know what flavors to
expect before taking a bite. It's also a great idea if you are
concerned about your guests having a food allergy, especially with nuts.

My first round of pineapple flowers were a bust. My oven does not heat evenly, and the first batch was scorched. Second time around, I made sure to rotate my cookie trays halfway through each 30 minute baking time.

You can see they still caramelized quite a bit on the edges. I found that it's crucial to slice the pineapple as thin as possible. Using a serrated knife will help. Like good barbeque, cook them low and slow. 200-225º F for 30 minutes on each side. Once they are dried out, place the flowers in the cupcake pan.

Leave the flowers in the cupcake tin for a while. Make these ahead of time and just let them sit and continue to dry out. They are so delicious! It was so hard to not devour these before the party!

Do you love hummingbird cupcakes? What's your favorite cake? I want to hear from you!

Wishing you a sweet Thursday!
Months ago I found this great shop called Harvest – a local Silicon Valley based furniture and home accessories shop. I love the relaxed, comfortable yet sophisticated California style they offer. {I'll post some photos of their shop later.} But, I just had to share these adorable mini chalkboards I found. Aren't they cute? I bought the larger of the two. {You can purchase a similar one at Urban Outfitters.}

I picked-up the chalkboard not sure what I would do with it. Then, Brian and I found these cast metal letters at Restoration Hardware. They were on sale, and we picked up an "I" {I revealed Cubscout's name here.} for our daughter. We figured we would add it to our dining room collage wall.

The blank chalkboard was staring at me one day. It needed some love, so I wrote "love" on it. A little light went off. I thought it would be fun to pick-up a metal letter "U" as well and create "I love you" wall art. You never know when inspiration will hit.

The perfect spot for it is at the entrance of Cubscout's room. What do you think?
We had a great time celebrating the day with my parents and in-laws and then threw her a fun Teddy Bear Picnic themed birthday party the following Saturday. We chose a bear theme because we called her Cubscout while she was occupying my belly. Her nickname came as a result of a combination of nicknames that Brian calls me – Scout and Mama Bear. She's my cub-scout. Get it?

Below is her beautiful invitation created by Beehive21 Design {Angela, the designer/owner, is a very good friend of ours. Her work is all custom and so gorgeous!}. If I blurred out Cubscout's name, it would totally ruin the design, so I guess I will reveal Cub's name today {But she will always be Cubscout on this site from now on.}. Her name is Isla {Pronounced EYE-lah – It's Scottish.}. We call her Isla Bear mostly :-)

I found these pink gingham and rose platters at Ikea, and that set the color scheme and pattern for the party. They also had matching napkins. Here are photos of our tables and decor:

We also had a "guess how many gummy bears are in the jar" game.
We used one mason jar for the bears and one for the guesses.
I found the pink 1st birthday bear on the right at Party City.
So once I make the NY Times Best Selling List, I can buy a sweet little house on a vineyard. {I better get typing...} The first B&B I can remember staying in was in Scotland. I was 7, and my family was spending Easter break in the UK {My dad was stationed in West Germany at the time.}. We arrived in the early evening, and the proprietors had mercy on my parents and us three tired {and probably cranky} kids and made us the most wonderful roasted lamb dinner. I can still taste the rich lamb with the green mint jelly smeared on top. Mmmmm! After dinner, we hopped into the deep european-sized bath tub and sloshed water all over the bathroom floor as my sister and I pretended to be mermaids.

I discovered a great blog today, An Inviting Home, while perusing through the link-up party on Emily A. Clark. Sarah of An Inviting Home submitted her awesome kids' play space. I was looking through Sarah's home tour and totally stopped in my tracks when I saw this {See photo below}. It's a COFFEE BAR! In their dining room! How clever and fun is that?!

Don't you think this is an awesome idea for my future B&B? I love it!
Her family hails from "Minnesooota." Sarah, of course {I don't know her personally, but I'm sure she is.}, is a sweet midwestern gal who asks her guests if she can get them a warm drink as they pull off their layers of snow gear. But here's the thing, she has five beautiful kids to chase after as well. {Get her a cape! She's a super hero!} Instead of wrangling all of her kids AND being the hostess with the mostess, she can kindly direct them over to her very own coffee bar. I think this idea is incredibly fun.

Google...Apple...Ebay...all the big cheeses in tech are HQ'd here.} is so different than the other major metropolitan areas I've lived in {NYC, DC, Miami}. My friends and I always joke that conversations at all of our dinner parties always end up focused around technology, the start-ups they work for, or the latest app designed by someone we know. Most of the time I just smile and nod. I don't know anything about analytics, computer programming, or app design. {I know, can't keep your eyes open, can you? Snooze fest!} No in all seriousness, it's cool. I love being surrounded by passionate, smart, and innovative people.

It's not uncommon to have someone ask for the WiFi network password at our house. I always have to dig into the mason jar that holds all of our spare change to pull out the little piece of paper on which Brian has written our password. Strange spot for a password, I know.

Ann Marie over at White House Black Shutters {I really enjoy her blog!} came up with the greatest idea to make sure your guests can easily access your network password and you don't have to go digging for it. Why not make your password into artwork? It's an inexpensive project and looks really cute. If you are into graphic design, you could even create a fun graphic in Illustrator. I just might do this and add it to our collage wall over the dining room table.
P.S. Ann Marie has a beautiful home, some really cute munchkins {Another arriving any day now!}, and even a MOM CAVE. How do I get one of those?! You should follow her blog. I do :-)
We style our homes. We style ourselves. Why not style your work space?

The truth is, the more your work space reflects you and the things that
make you happy, the more productive you will be. Throw out your old,
drab, putty colored stapler and replace it with a bright aqua stapler
from Poppin!

I just discovered Poppin, an online retailer that designs and sells a colorful, chic, yet affordable line of office essentials. The company launched in September 2012 offering 250 products. With candy colored desk accessories like staplers, tape dispensers, pen cups, letter trays, notebooks, and even filing cabinets, you can define your "workstyle" and revitalize your work space.

Poppin provides a great online shopping experience with the use of two tools, "Design-a-Desk" and "Shop-by-Color." Design-a-Desk allows you to virtually customize a few desk products so you can play with color combinations. Choose one of the color blocks at the top of the page to shop by color. I designed the aqua, pink, and yellow desk pictured above. Fun, right? I will be ordering one of their pen cups and soft notebooks in red to match my home office.

Go on! Show your true colors and treat your desk to a makeover.

It's incredibly moist yet dense, and the bits of orange peel remind me of marmalade without the bitterness. This cake would be a lovely addition to any brunch table or even better topped with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream for dessert {Oooo and a drizzle of homemade blood orange syrup!}.
We are still loving it. The room is so much brighter and happier. We changed out the gray curtains and replaced them with these pretty cream, teal and gray floral curtains from Target's new Threshold home decor line {We needed the longer length of 95", so we had to order them online.}. Then we headed over to the FLOR store in Palo Alto to create a new rug for the living space.

FLOR is "a system of carpet squares that you assemble to create custom rugs or any shape or size." {I got that off their site.} Simply put...It's freaking genius. It's easy to assemble, clean and design. If you spill something on a carpet tile, just pick it up, wash it off and let it air dry. It's really the perfect rug for a family with children and/or pets and high traffic areas. Check out the video about their product.

We had an incredible experience at FLOR {I have not been paid to review this company. It's honest to goodness feedback.}! We walked in with our paint chip {Behr in Lagoon} and the measurements of our rug space {9' x 12'} and were greeted by Colleen, who manages the PA store. Colleen showed us around the showroom, which is really well organized and set-up for you to play with the carpet squares. She explained the different types of carpet piles/textures and color choices for each - so many options.

We spent over an hour looking at colors and laying them all over the floor in different patterns. Colleen even pulled out a sketch pad to work on dimensions and designs with Brian. We wanted to bring a pattern into the room that wasn't too busy or overbearing. Although I was not one to jump on the chevron bandwagon in the past couple years, there is something very appealing about having a thick multicolored chevron rug in this space. It's a classic pattern, and we could bring together the teal, cream, and added in navy as an accent color. For a small fee, FLOR will pre-cut carpet squares into 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, quad or diagonal cuts. To create our chevron pattern, we had them cut the tiles diagonally.

Here's our new rug and some tips on putting together your own.

It's been over two months since my last post. Where does the time go? June brought us lots of company, our daughter's first birthday and my 31st {Yeah, I just told you my age. I LOVE my thirties!}, so we've been busy. I feel like the dust has settled, and I am feeling so refreshed and excited to see what adventures year 31 will bring me. One of my resolutions for my 31st is to start blogging every day. Hopefully my new editorial calendar will help keep me on track :-)

Things are looking pretty good over here at 3rd&P! We've completed some much needed (more like wanted) work around the house - redecorated the living/dining room space, started redesigning our master bedroom, hung a ceiling fan in our living room, and installed a new dining room lighting fixture. I'll be posting these projects throughout the next few weeks.

If you have found my blog through Pinterest (I have had a lot of interest in the Sweet Pink Polka Dot Room!), Facebook or a friend, thanks so much for stopping by 3rd and Patterson! Like I said in one of my first posts, I really didn't expect anyone out of my immediate family to read this blog. I'm really touched by all the great feedback and interest.
This mom stuff ain't easy, kids. Our cute little Cubscout was down and out with the stomach flu and then a nasty fever. But, she's feeling so much better. Just look at this sweet face :-) She's getting so big - can't believe I'm planning her first birthday party already. Stay tuned for my post on her party - it's a Teddy Bear Picnic!

In other news...

Brian and I are in the middle of redesigning our living room and master bedroom. We really loved our deep, rich maroon/plum wall in the living room; it was sophisticated and really made a statement in the room. But, now that we have a happy little munchkin running round, we wanted to bring more light into the room. The plum color was really eating up light all day long. Mornings were dark, causing us to turn on every light in the room so Little Bear could see her toys and I my cup of joe. {Thank God for coffee. And mascara. And cover-up.}

Many of my friends who know I have a knack for design ask me, "Where do you start when designing a room? How do you know what color to paint the walls?" A room can be inspired by many different things - a gorgeous pillow, your favorite style of art (Ex: Art Deco), a rug, a beautiful hotel room. Inspiration sometimes comes when you are least expecting it. In our case, it was this painting by Brian's Great Aunt Harriet. We inherited a set of paintings after she passed two years ago. She was an incredible artist and used to work in advertising in San Francisco.

We've had the pair on the walls in our living room for about 6 months now. When we started talking about redesigning the space, we both gravitated to this painting as inspiration for a color palette. We really liked the combination of navy, teal, cream, and chartreuse/yellow.

Knowing that we wanted to change the plum wall color, we decided to find a teal that complimented the teal in the painting (sofa/her necklace). Trying to find the right teal took a while. It's not an easy color to match. Most were either too green or too blue, and we were looking for something in the middle. From nine, we narrowed it down to four:

Behr: Lagoon, Teal Zeal, & Aquatic Green
Sherwin-Williams: Lakeshore

Tip / If you cannot decide on a paint swatch, take the swatches to the hardware store and have them mix you up some samples. They cost anywhere between $2.50-$5.00 each. Paint them on the wall in a large square and leave them up for a few days. Look at the way the light hits the different colors during the day. The color will look different as the light changes.

{Photo take at night...We chose the far right. It was the perfect mix of the middle and left color.}

We chose Behr paint in Lagoon. It's the right mix of green and blue. And just an aside...I think Behr paint covers so much better than Sherwin-Williams. Way better. We got the paint and primer in one, slapped up a nice thick coat and called it a night.

What do you think? It's so much brighter in here during the day. We are really happy with the way it turned out.

It's a big difference from this:

If you're hesitant about painting a bold color in one of your rooms, I say, Go for it! It's just paint. You can always paint over it if you don't like it.

Stay tuned for posts on the rest of the room!
It was packed with boxes of my late grandmother's photos, craft and sewing supplies, art work, and left over wedding centerpieces and accessories from my brother's and my wedding. Mom utilizes the room a lot to wrap gifts, sew and make holiday decorations. But after designing the rest of the house, this room became an after thought. The forbidden "dumping ground" in the professional organizing profession (We're both organizers, so this is ironic.).

During my Christmas visit, we took a day and cleaned out the room and hiked down to Ikea to look at some furniture. We kept all the bookcases for storage, cleared out a fold out table that she was using for crafting, and replaced it with a sewing table and two bookcases that became her crafting/wrapping table. Check out her new space. She loves it!!!
Cubscout and I took a trip back east to Charlotte, NC last month to visit with my family. My parents live on Lake Norman (30 mins north of Charlotte), where they built their dream house back in 2007. They call it Two Cedars.

I love being in their house. It's open and bright, and you really can't beat afternoon coffee (...or margaritas...) on the balcony overlooking the lake. This is the home in which Brian and I had our wedding rehearsal dinner, I dressed for my wedding, and Cubscout was baptized on the dock this past December. It's a sacred place to me. My mom is a talented decorator, and I just have to share pics of the house with y'all. So go grab a lil' sweet tea and put your feet up, Sugar.

Welcome to Two Cedars!

Brian and I met her parents, Cari and Brad, in our birthing classes last year, and we became fast friends. They bought a gorgeous home built in the 1940s and asked me if I would help them design a few rooms. I was so touched that they asked for my help. To help Linnea feel safe and comfortable in her new house, we started with her room.

Linnea had her heart set on pink polka dots all over her room. Of course she did! What three year old girl doesn't love pink and polka dots?! Cari had already purchased a beautiful and colorful Amy Butler comforter and sham set, so that set the tone for our pink and teal polk dot surprise. Here are photos and details of the room.

We sold our queen-sized bed set in less than 24 hours (Thank you, Craigslist.) and had it out of the house just in time for the delivery of our new king-sized Tempur-Pedic mattress. (Yes this bed is amazing. And, yes, I am writing this post in bed right now.) In between cleaning the house, feeding and wrangling a spirited toddler, and helping with the bed situation, I threw together a new slow cooker recipe.

I guess you could call me a "rustic cook." Unless I find a special recipe for a dinner party we are hosting or am baking, it is rare that I use a recipe to cook dinner. Most days, I literally rummage through the freezer, fridge and cabinets, dig out some meat, salad fixings, and a veggie or starch, make a sauce and call it a day. I always tell my husband, "If it doesn't taste good, we'll order pizza." Our slow cooker doesn't get as much love as it should. But on crazy days during which I know I don't want to be cooking dinner after we put the wee one down for the night, I dig out the old cooker.

So amid the chaos on Sunday afternoon, I came up with this chicken concoction. The lentils were a bit of an after thought. I threw them in an hour after I started cooking the rest of the stew. Unfortunately, I didn't get the chance to take a picture of the final product, but just expect it to be thick and creamy. The chicken falls off the bone. Cubscout kept shoving handfuls of it in her mouth. For what it's worth, this recipe has a 10 month old's stamp of approval. Here's the recipe!

Chicken Lentil Stew / Serves 4

4 frozen chicken thighs
1 can (10.5 oz.) chicken broth
1 can (10.75 oz.) cream of mushroom
1/4 cup Marsala cooking wine
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 1/2 cups dried brown lentils
1/2 of a sweet onion, chopped
1 cup button mushrooms, sliced
1 cup baby carrots, whole
5 small red potatoes, quartered
2 Cloves of garlic, minced
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 bay leaf

Directions

Drizzle the oil in the bottom of the slow cooker. Place the chicken in the bottom of the cooker and pour the rest of the ingredients on top. Give it a stir, and cook on low for 6 hours. Voila. Isn't that easy? Anyone can make this.

Serve it up with a side salad and rolls or biscuits. If it comes out too thick for you, you can always add more chicken stock or a 1/2 cup of water.

Vegetarian version / Leave out the chicken and replace the chicken broth with vegetable broth. Make 2 cups of lentils instead of the amount listed above. Lentils are a great way to add protein and iron into your diet.
